Octave Virginal
This little instrument is one of the strangest harpsichords ever built. It's an octave virginal made in the shape of a tiny console piano. It has three soundboards--one in front for the bass, one in back for the tenor, and one on top for the alto and treble. Since the bass and tenor soundboards are vertical, their jacks run between the strings and the soundboards.
The original resides in the Berlin Museum, and its picture can be seen in their catalog. Bizarre as it is, the construction is quite straightforward, and as I built it I realized that the instrument would make a great kit. After collaboration with ZHI, they announced its availability as a kit on October 6, 2000. Kits and/or finished instruments are available upon request.
